Custom-made sapphire windows for MBDA
MBDA, Europe’s leading missile and missile systems company, needed two custom-made observation windows for a series of tests on an engine.
The windows had to be adapted to the areas observed and meet resistance and performance criteria under severe conditions of use (very high temperature and pressure).
In response to their request, SOREM – specialised in custom-made optical windows – designed and manufactured two sapphire windows: a shouldered and prismatic window with a thickness of 45 mm and dimensions of 86 mm x 87 mm; a shouldered window with a thickness of 35 mm with a dimension of 123 mm x 112 mm.
Performance of sapphire windows
The sapphire windows contributed to the smooth running of the experience, exceeding MBDA’s expectations:
- Conducted more tests than originally planned
- Very high resistance and performance of the portholes
- Excellent transmission
